Danish furniture in particular is very focused on organic shapes and lines, and has sometimes been likened to Japanese design for this reason. Scandinavian design more generally avoids waste and excess, seeking to find the perfect equilibrium between materials, final function and design. Wood, including pine, elm and birch, ceramics and fabrics all find their way into designs from Sweden, Finland and Denmark, but the use of metal isn’t shunned either, as you can see in the metal lampstand design pictured below. Certain designs are made to be mass-produced, but there is also a thriving craft scene in Scandinavia, from which you can source one-off pieces and more original items. The Scandinavian look can be particularly useful in smaller, darker rooms, when you want to introduce an element of lightness and airiness.
